About Reptiles

In the World there are on average nearly 8000 different species of reptiles, each one with their own unique features and ways they live.

As many of us know reptiles are cold blooded animals which mean they cannot keep a constant temperature on their own and count on the things they have around them to keep them warm and even to cool them down. Most of use consider reptiles as cold blooded but this doesn’t actually mean that their blood is cold the actual term for these species is exothermic this is where the blood heats itself from an outer source due to not being able to stabilise their own Temperature like humans do.

In the world the Reptiles are one of the longest living species on our planet. For Example, Tortoises can live up to 150 years.
The most popular reptile to have as a pet has been known as the Ball Python, the Python can live up to 40 years if cared for correctly.
Around the world scientist have been taking note of our non venomous snakes and around two thirds of them contain no venom and considered non-harmful to humans.

The second most popular pet to have is the Chameleon know to us as being able to change its colour and camouflage itself for protection against predators and to blend into their surroundings, but these colour changing’s are usually related to temperature change , emotion or anger and can become brightly coloured.

The fact is many people assume that snakes and other reptiles are slimy cold creatures, but most reptiles have sweat glands and to touch are usual very cool and dry , snakes feel very much like your finger nails as their skin is made from the formation as human finger nails called keratin

Many reptile enclosures have to have basking spots where a certain temperature over rocks or small logs is provided to give more heat in one spot, this is a bit like when humans sunbathe.
Lighting is also a key feature in setting up your environment UV Lights best for this to help the reptile produce Vitamin D3 this acts a dietary supplement.
